Description: KYA upgraded a 2600 square foot deteriorating rubber tile playground surface with Custom Manufactured Substrate tiles and synthetic grass to create a resilient and safe playground system for the Chula Vista Elementary School District.
Before and After results
Background: Valle Lindo Elementary School witnessed their glued down rubber tiles buckling and rising at the seams due to heat expansion and being improperly nailed to one another during original installation. The tiles’ surface not only looked unpleasant but had become a dangerous tripping hazard. Chula Vista ESD received some local funding with an expiration date for use so time was of the essence.
Method of Approach: The School District was able to utilize one of KYA’s Cooperative Purchasing Contracts to procure a turf playground system allowing a fast and efficient sale and subsequent install. This process began with the demolition and removal of the existing rubber tile system and the installation of interlocking Custom Manufactured Substrate. TLS then applied the UV protected Olive thatch synthetic grass which is designed for high foot traffic and general recreation. This playground turf system complies with the ASTM critical fall height requirements necessary for public use.
Result: Valle Lindo ES now enjoys a safe, lush, and aesthetically pleasing playground area requiring little maintenance that the kids can thoroughly enjoy. Chula Vista ESD would not have been able to locate, purchase, and install a playground surface in time to use their local funds without the utilization of the purchasing contract.
