Groundbreaking Ceremony for first ELO-P CUUBE™ Building in Richland School District

Shafter, CA - March 21, 2024 - KYA Services, an award winning specialized contractor, proudly announces the groundbreaking for Richland School District's CUUBE™ ELOP multi-purpose building. Made possible through full funding from California's Expanded Learning Opportunity Program (ELO-P), this groundbreaking initiative signifies a significant advancement in educational infrastructure.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony, held on March 21, 2024, commenced with opening remarks from Martin Rodriguez, Chief Business Official for Richland School District. This was followed by a flag salute and an insightful project overview by Jamie Cherry, the Expanded Learning Opportunity Coordinator, culminating in the groundbreaking ceremony. Notable attendees included Superintendent Rosa Romero, Assistant Superintendent Annette Blacklock and  members of the board.

Jamie Cherry, the ELO-P Coordinator at Richland School District remarked that ELO-P CUUBE™ will be dedicated space for afterschool programming ranging from STEM to visual and performing arts. With the roll-up doors, the building will blend inside and outside classroom activities depending on the weather, so activities such as drones, robotics, cheer and baton can utilize both environments. “The biggest thing is that it will be a safe space for students while parents are still at work. It will be a place that allows students to try various enrichment activities that they may not have had exposure to and try new things. It will be a space to be creative and think outside of the box.”

ELO-P funding supports afterschool and summer school enrichment programs for transitional kindergarten through sixth grade. Richland Junior High's CUUBE™ multi-purpose room marks the district's pioneering ELOP building. Customized to meet the unique needs of the extended learning program users, the CUUBE™ design features custom cabinetry, exterior handwash stations, integrated roll-up doors merging indoor and outdoor learning spaces, and a shade structure for additional outdoor learning opportunities. Beyond serving as a cutting-edge educational facility, it will also host community events and activities.

The installation of the CUUBE™ steel structure represents a monumental leap forward in educational architecture. Utilizing SidePlate® Moment Frame technology, CUUBE™ is a sustainable steel structure that surpasses seismic and wind shear code requirements without on-site welds. Its durability, adaptability and century-long lifespan position it as a community sanctuary during seismic events and natural disasters. Furthermore, large roll-up doors and clerestory windows foster seamless integration between indoor and outdoor learning environments, providing students access to fresh air, sunlight and nature.

"We are thrilled to introduce CUUBE™ to Richland Junior High and the wider community," stated Tony Leyds, CEO of KYA Services. "This groundbreaking technology epitomizes our commitment to creating enduring, innovative, and environmentally conscious educational environments."

The CUUBE™ building at Richland Junior High sets a new benchmark for excellence in educational infrastructure, aligning seamlessly with the district's mission to promote student success and well-being.
