GENERAL INFORMATION

Project Name: Longfellow Middle School

Building Location: Berkeley, California, United States

Project Type: Outdoor Basketball Court

DESCRIPTION

Longfellow Middle School is a public school in the Berkeley City Unified School District located in a quiet residential neighborhood of Berkeley, California. The school serves approximately 800 students in grades 6 to 8.

GOALS

The school’s outdoor basketball courts were ready for an upgrade after years of active use and exposure to the elements. To enhance both safety and appearance, the school pursued a vibrant durable resurfacing solution in time for the new school year.

PROCESS

OVERVIEW

KYA coordinated closely with the school’s facilities team and district officials to ensure a streamlined planning and execution process. By managing subcontractors and material delivery schedules, KYA helped minimize disruption to the school’s summer programs. The team also worked through a short construction window ensuring completion before students returned.

CONSTRUCTION

PRODUCTS AND SYSTEMS

The original asphalt surface was power washed, patched and leveled. A multi-layer acrylic resurfacing system was applied including two coats of acrylic resurfacer and two coats of color finish. New court striping included full-sized basketball courts and four square zones in vibrant school colors. Non-slip coatings were added for improved safety.

PROJECT RESULTS

Longfellow Middle School was very pleased with how the project turned out. The courts not only brightened up the school’s outdoor space but also encouraged more physical activity for students. The new surfacing provided a safe durable area for recreation that will serve the campus for years to come.
